The Shelly Sharpe Memorial Disc Golf Course

A Memorial to a 16 year old girl killed by a drunk driver

Chris Karis, Shelly Sharpe's stepfather and valued friend and analyst at WestGroup Research, along with Shelly's mother, Sharon, donated a majority of the funding to establish The Shelly Sharpe Disk Golf Course which Scottsdale Mayor Herb Drinkwater dedicated at Vista del Camino Park on Friday, March 9, 1984. The inscription of the Memorial Plaque reads:

Shelly Sharpe
Memorial Disc Course

Enjoy this course in celebration of Shelly's love of life.
Shelly Sharpe
1966-1982

Victim of a drunken driver
Please don't drink and drive.

Chris Karis is actively involved with the annual Shelly Sharpe Disc Golf Tournament scheduled for October 14th and 15th this year. Over the past few years, the tournament has lost some major sponsors and is having a tough time raising the money needed to provide T-shirts, discs, and prizes necessary for a significant tournament. Chris is dedicated to ensuring Shelly's tournament lives on. (Shelly's mother, Sharon, died of cancer in 1996.) The funds required for the tournament are modest, but essential. WestGroup will be making a donation, and we would like to encourage you to consider making a small contribution. Your company logo may be displayed at the tournament in any of several ways.

About Disc Golf
Disc golf is conceptually the same as regular golf, except that the discs are thrown toward and into baskets. The game is called disc golf, not Frisbee golf, as Frisbee is a brand name and there are many different manufacturers of golf discs.

As in regular golf, where there are many kinds of clubs, there are a wide assortment of golf discs. There are drivers (for long throws), midrange discs, putters, discs designed to turn left or right, discs for playing in the wind, discs that are used for rolling shots (to roll past trees or other objects), and discs that float (most golf discs do not) and others. There are even mini-discs to mark shots. Golf discs are considerably heavier than the discs most people are used to throwing at the park or playing with a pet. The typical golf disc weighs 150 to 199 grams, the typical disc you play catch with weighs 90 to 120 grams.

Directions to the Course
The Shelly Sharpe Memorial Disc Golf Course's main entrance is located just East of the intersection of Roosevelt and Miller Roads in Scottsdale's Vista Del Camino Park. For more information about the course please visit their web site at http://members.aol.com/diskerdoo/newpage1.html.

Sponsorship Information
Sponsorships start at $50. The deadline is as early as September 1st for some packages. Feel free to contact Dan Ginnelly (azdgc@uswest.net), the Director of the tournament, with questions. Call WestGroup at 602-707-0050 to request a sponsorship information sheet. Donations may be sent to Chris Karis C/O WestGroup Research 2720 E. Thomas Rd., Building A Phoenix, AZ 85016. Please make checks payable to the Arizona Disc Golf Club (AZDGC).

Thank you and please don't drink and drive.
