Half of Arizona Adults Undecided on Governor Race

PHOENIX - A just-released study of 401 Arizona adults by WestGroup Research of Phoenix showed that nearly half of all Arizona adults had not yet decided their vote for governor. Of those who have decided, the leading candidates, Janet Napolitano and Matt Salmon, are in a dead heat (24% vs. 26%). The overall study, which took place throughout September, has a margin of error of + 5% at a 95% confidence level.

Highlights:

  • Men are more likely to support Matt Salmon - 30% Salmon vs. 20% Napolitano.

  • Women are more likely to support Janet Napolitano - 29% Napolitano vs. 23% Salmon.

  • Among Republican respondents, 62% plan to vote for Salmon vs. 5% for Napolitano.

  • Among Democratic respondents, 55% plan to vote for Napolitano vs. 5% for Salmon.

  • Among respondents who voted for Paul Johnson in 1998, 66% said they plan to vote for Janet Napolitano and 10% plan to vote for Matt Salmon.

  • Among those who voted for Jane Hull in 1998, 42% plan to vote for Matt Salmon and 15% plan to vote for Janet Napolitano.

In the coming election for governor, who do you think you will vote for?

  • Men are more likely to support Matt Salmon - 30% Salmon vs. 20% Napolitano.

  • Women are more likely to support Janet Napolitano - 29% Napolitano vs. 23% Salmon.


Among respondents who are registered Democrats, the majority said they are voting for Janet Napolitano (55%). Matt Salmon has 5% and 33% are undecided.

Side note: Among respondents who voted for Paul Johnson in 1998, 66% said they plan to vote for Janet Napolitano and 10% plan to vote for Matt Salmon. (n=50)

 

Republicans seem a little more solidly behind Matt Salmon - 62% of Republican respondents said they are voting for him. Janet Napolitano get 5% and 25% are undecided.

Side note: Among those who voted for Jane Hull in 1998 only 42% plan to vote for Matt Salmon and 15% plan to vote for Janet Napolitano. (n=96)

 

Research Results—Background Information
Each month WestGroup Research conducts WestTrack, an omnibus poll, with Arizona residents. The following findings are a portion of the results of the non-proprietary questions posed in the January phase of the WestTrack polling (to residents of metro Phoenix).
