Arizona Sports: Are You a Fan?

You can take the boy away from “Sun Devils” but you can’t take the “Sun Devil” out of the boy. When asked which Arizona teams, college or professional, Arizonans considered themselves fans of, the overall number one response was Arizona State University’s (ASU) men’s sports program (20%). Twenty-three percent of male respondents named ASU, with the majority of ASU fans coming from the metro Phoenix area (26%), 9 percent from Tucson and 17 percent from other areas of the state.
University of Arizona’s (U of A) men’s sports program was named by 17 percent of respondents. Not surprisingly, Wildcat fans are mostly in the metro Tucson area (48%) and parts of the state other than metro Phoenix (16%). In the Phoenix area, 7% claimed allegiance to U of A’s men’s sports teams.
Among women’s sports teams/programs, UA’s women’s sports program was named by 9 percent of respondents and ASU’s women’s sports by 6 percent. Northern Arizona University’s men’s (2%) and women’s (1%) sports programs garnered a small level of support.
Maybe it’s the time of year, but the second most “fanned” team in the state is the Phoenix Suns, with 19 percent of those surveyed naming themselves as fans. About one of six respondents (16%) said they were Diamondbacks fans, 12 percent Cardinal fans, and 4 percent Coyote fans.
