Arizonans Support Retesting Older Drivers

PHOENIX – The vast majority of Arizona adults would favor a law that requires people over age 75 to renew and test for their driver’s license every few years. That is the finding of an August survey of 458 adult residents of Arizona. The telephone study is representative of all Arizona adults within plus or minus 5% at 95% confidence.

Support for such a law is strongest among people who are 30 to 49 years of age (95%). Opposition is strongest among retirees, but even the majority of retirees would favor such a law – 77% favor vs. 22% oppose.

Very few Arizona adults would favor requiring those 75+ to give up their licenses (11%). On the other side, a slight majority would favor raising the driving age to 18 – 55% favor vs. 42% oppose. Support is stronger among women (61%) than men (50%). Support is also a little stronger among adults who have no children living at home (58%) than those who do (50%).
