by Phoenix Chapter of American Marketing Association
PHOENIX – Edward A. Bergo, Principal, owner and project director of WestGroup
Research in Phoenix, has been named Marketer of the Year by the Phoenix Chapter of the American
Marketing Association (AMA). The award, also called the President's Spectrum Award, is presented
each year to an individual who had made great contributions to the field of marketing. The award
was presented Wednesday, May 19, at the annual AMA Spectrum Awards.
In making the announcement, Arizona Republic columnist Barry Kluger said, “Ed is known
and loved by many in the industry. He freely gives of his time and expertise to anyone who asks.
His support and involvement in the AMA has been generous. You don’t have to look far to find a
friend of Ed’s in the market research industry. Ed builds lasting friendships with his colleagues,
clients and associates and always conducts business with the highest level of integrity.”
“I am genuinely honored and proud to be selected Marketer of the Year by the Phoenix
Chapter of the American Marketing Association,” Ed says of his selection. “I am humbled to join
(become part of) such an exclusive group of businesspeople and academicians from the Phoenix
area who have been recognized for the impact they have had in the field of marketing.
“As a former president of the chapter, I marvel at the progress it has made over the years and
congratulate the Chapter Board for the success of such an event as the Spectrum Awards. It
indicates just what a positive force the AMA has become in the Phoenix business community.”
Ed has spent more than 35 years in the market research industry. Ed began his career with
Johnson Wax in 1960 where he served for 14 years in both U.S. and European marketing operations
conducting consumer and advertising research. During this time Ed was involved in some of the
early applications of perceptual mapping and multidimensional scaling of product attributes to
determine relationships between competitive products.
Following his time at Johnson Wax, Ed owned and operated data collection businesses in Phoenix,
Albuquerque, and Green Bay, Wisconsin. He is recognized as a pioneer in the early adoption of
computerized data collection technologies.
Since 1989, He has been an owner and project director at WestGroup Research in Phoenix.
Currently, he provides client service primarily for retail, healthcare and packaged goods clients.
Ed’s vast experience is frequently drawn on by all of the researchers at WestGroup- he serves as an
advisor and consultant to other Project Directors and he generously gives his time and expertise to
mentor up and coming researchers.
Ed has been active in the American Marketing Association and Marketing Research
Association for more than 35 years. In 1991, he served as president of the Phoenix Chapter of
AMA.
“Ed has been my associate, counselor and friend for 15 years,” says Ted Apostol,
WestGroup Research president. “We discovered each other at the right time in 1989. A deal was
struck and we became the main investors in the purchase of WestGroup Research. Ed Bergo is well
known for being a good businessman with high integrity and marketing savvy. He well deserves
this recognition. The managers and staff at WestGroup are very proud of him.” More Press Releases
